HSC Language Arts Class Sequence
In an effort to help students and parents choose language arts and academic classes which will best suit individual students, we've outlined the skills which a student will learn in a language arts class at a particular level. Our new and improved lists include both writing and literature standards. We're calling these levels Foundational, Core and Advanced. Students should be comfortable with many Foundational Skills before moving on to Core classes. And Core skills are necessary to take most Advanced language arts classes at HSC. We hope that this helps you to select classes which will most benefit your students. Core writing skills are necessary for some HSC cross-curricular classes which require academic papers
Do not expect every class within a given level to cover all of the skills at that level. That would be unusual. Students will generally benefit from taking more than one class at each level. Some classes focus on writing, some on literature and some on both. High school students need to develop all language arts skills to be well-educated.
**Keep in mind that these tools (chart and lists) are meant as guidelines to aid you, not to box you in. If you have questions about where your student belongs, talk to the teachers and ask questions. Teachers may request a sample of student writing.
